ECLECTUS AS PETS
By Carolyn Swicegood
For the companion bird owner who values beauty, the elegant Eclectus parrot is at the top of the list! The males' color ranges from emerald to lime green and the males of all subspecies sport a brilliantly colored candy-corn beak. The females are varying shades of red, blue, lavender and purple, with an additional daisy yellow band on the tail of the females of the Vosmaeri subspecies. All adult females have a smooth, jet-black beak
Because most Eclectus parrots are exceptionally quiet, they are considered suitable for apartment living. They need the largest cage or aviary that one's space and budget will allow. Horizontal space is important because of their large wingspan.. They require daily exercise to remain happy and healthy. Their cage must be wide enough to allow them to flap their wings vigorously if they are unable to fly in the home or in a large aviary. Three feet is a good width if they must spend a good deal of time in the cage. They enjoy being out and about with their owners, so a parrot tower or tree perch is an important accessory.
Eclectus parrots are classified among the top three parrots for talking ability. Rivaling the African Grey and the talking Amazon parrots in clarity of speech and scope of vocabulary, they not only repeat many words and phrases but some learn entire songs. They are adept at imitating sounds that they find interesting.
Eclectus love to eat! Foods of deep color including greens, sprouts, fruits and vegetables should be the mainstay of their diet. They do not need vitamin A supplements or shots, as was once advocated. They assimilate the vitamin A that they need from the colorful orange, yellow, red, and green foods like pomegranates, mangos, cantaloupe, carrots, red and green bell peppers, kale, collards, dandelion and other greens. All parrots should be given organically grown produce whenever possible. If given the proper diet and lots of love, Eclectus parrots are relatively easy to maintain. They are much loved by the families who keep them as companion birds.
